The youth have been strongly advised against relying solely on advice from self-styled motivational speakers when making choices about life. According to the General Manager of the Kumasi branch of YFM, Mr Samuel Ato Afful, such inexperienced people are only after money and unmerited recognition, and the youth ought to be careful when dealing with them.
Speaking to students of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) in Accra at a seminar on “Learning Skills and Career Guidance” organized by Unilime Foundation, a students’ group on campus, Mr Afful stated categorically that “the best moment to make any decision as an adult about one’s life is when, having listened to all the pieces of advice, you then in solitude, devoid of any manipulations, consider the pros and cons of available options, then settle on the best choice”.
The students were encouraged to listen to experts with proven record of lifetime achievements and those who will expose them to the practicalities of life and how to deal with life’s challenges, as opposed to those who just come up with several clichés for the sake of popularity.
The YFM General Manager who is a Communications Specialist and a Life Coach, took the students through the “KSA of a Successful Learner” where he touched on the need to acquire adequate knowledge and skills and have the right Attitude towards life in building a career.
“It has been said and agreed in many circles that knowledge is power. However I disagree. Wise people make good use of the knowledge they have acquired, and that makes them powerful. So knowledge only becomes powerful when put to good use”, he opined.
Ato Afful, who authors the daily motivational series dubbed “Relevance For Success” admonished students of AUCC to make good use of the libraries and the internet for research.
Attracting applause from the students, he counseled them to disabuse their minds of any expectations that somebody will pamper them in life because everyone is busy with their own life challenges.
“Self motivation coupled with diligence in hard work and faith, is all you need to succeed. And please do not aim to prove to critics that you can be successful in life. Let their doubts about you motivate you but do not let it be the main reason you want to succeed. Rather aim to be useful to yourself and your generation; after all, life is a journey of deliberate choices so be choosy in making choices about your life”.
