Multichoice Ghana Launches 14 New Resource Centers


On the 16th of October 2015, MultiChoice Ghana and the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service commissioned 14 schools across Ghana as Multichoice Resource Centers.The addition of the 14 schools to the already existing 74 schools, bring the total to 88 across the country.

The selected schools were presented with DStv Explora decoders, 32 Inch Smart TV’s and free subscription to the DStv Education Bouquet. On the same day, two teachers from each of the schools were trained maximize the use the equipment handed over to them, to augment their classes

The beneficiary schools were Christ the King Catholic SHS, Notre Dame Girls SHS, Obiri Yeboah SHS, Presbyterian Senior High Tech, St Mary’s SHS, Accra, Tamale Senior High, Sandema Senior High Technical, Nkonya Senior High School, Bonzo-Kaku Secondary Technical, Anum Anglican Primary, National Science Resource Centre, Shama High School, Oguaa Football for Hope Centre and Jirapa SHS.

In attendance at the event, were the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, representatives from the Ministry of Education; including the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Director of the GES LADMA assembly, Directors of the Secondary Division, Science Education, Basic Education and Mrs. Georgina Quaisie an educationist and former director of the Science Education Unit.

Multichoice Ghana is keenly aware of its responsibility not only to provide the highest quality video entertainment but also to invest meaningfully in the development of Ghanaian communities.  And therefore, the establishment of the Multichoice Resource Centers is a strategic approach to this responsibility, with consideration of our expertise, resources and assets.  The Multichoice Resource Centre project aims to improve teaching and learning processes by equipping schools with audio-visual educational equipment through which the MultiChoice educational bouquet can be accessed by schools.

Presenting the equipment to the schools, the General Manager of MultiChoice Ghana, Mr. Cecil Sunkwa- Mills said “Multichoice Ghana will continue to be a strong advocate for continuing investment in education and training, in order to help build a brighter future for our children. We believe that one of the best ways to propel our country and economy forward is by strengthening our educational sector.

The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking at the launch stated that “Government is passionate about  educational TV learning as this will allow students all across Ghana to have a consistent level of the quality of education which is also in line with MCG’s vision” He is hopeful that MCG can adopt all the GES Science Centres as Multichoice Resource Centres as well.

The first Multichoice Resource Centre was established in 2004 as a corporate social investment by MultiChoice Africa and currently, there are over 900 MultiChoice Resource Centers established in over 28 countries across the continent. Ghana now has 88 resource centers across Ghana and additional centres will be added on, on an annual basis.

Other Corporate Social investments by Multichoice Ghana include the creation of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, a partnership between Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa aims to inspire innovative thinking among secondary and high-school students, to create awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life, and to showcase the many ways that satellites impacts on the development of the African continent.

The company also supports The Spelling Bee, an initiative of Young Educators Foundation, a local NGO dedicated to children’s education in Ghana. The sponsorship covers registration, training and studying, vocabulary testing and oral spelling and provision of learning materials for students from schools interested in taking part.
