Ghanaian DJs only play “Kum Kum Cha” songs – Rex Omar

Legendary highlife musician, Rexford Owusu Marfo, has taken a swipe at Ghanaian radio presenters and DJs over the choice of songs played on radio shows.Rex Omar, as he is known in showbiz circles, describes most of the tunes played on the airwaves “Kum Kum Cha” songs.

Speaking on Luv FM’s “Oseikrom Top 10 Chart Show” with Austine Woode, the “Abiba” hit maker said he would not blame the young musicians for making songs that people consider as “noise”.

According to him, today’s form of music production is influenced by radio DJs and presenters who are more interested in playing high tempo and danceable songs, instead of mid tempo and slow songs of high quality.“Until we change our mentality that every song is made for us to dance, the young musicians will continue to make such songs and not think of making songs with a slow tempo,” he observed.

In reaction to concerns that DJs play songs which mostly appeal to the public and not necessarily high tempo songs, Rex Omar queried: “take a song like Wogbe by Nat Brew, how many times did you play it on radio?”

Hiplife Artiste, Guru, who also spoke on the Show, stated that he does high tempo songs because “that is what the fans want and so I have to do it for them because they are the consumers”.

Guru said he has lot of good songs which epitomize him as a versatile musician but noted that radio DJs prefer to play only his high tempo songs hence can’t turn around to say he doesn’t do good songs.

“Go back and pick a song like ‘I Do’ which I did with Afriyie, listen to the lyrics and beat arrangement and you will appreciate it as good music but how many of you radio Djs played that song?” Guru asked.
